November 2023 — Update from the Chair
Executive Director Sandra Barrington updated two dozen Democratic Women this month on Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation initiatives. Women’s club members then proceeded with regular business.
State Party Organizer Sue Hildebrand led the Congressional District 3 Regional Organizing Council Zoom call this month.
This meeting was followed by CD3 Congressional Candidate Jessica Morse speaking in person at the Tahoe Truckee Democratic Club. Twenty five people engaged with the candidate to hear how she intends to replace first term Congressman Kevin Kiley next November.
Speaking of upcoming elections, Nevada County Democrats hosted a second Senatorial candidate, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (Alameda County), The first was Congressperson Adam Schiff (Glendale). 230 people attended this time to hear Barbara talk at the Grass Valley Center for the Arts. Many city and county elected officials were also present. Special thanks to the 30 DEM volunteers making the event possible.
We held another successful rally to "Unmask Kevin Kiley" on the third Friday of the month.
Two important down-the-hill events and one online Zoom event concluded November’s busy schedule as follows:
Six Nevada County DEMS helped 12 Folsom Area Democratic Club members canvas neighborhoods down the hill. DEM mutual aid met in Folsom, trained themselves on special cellphone enabled software and then fanned out to door knock the strategic neighborhoods needed to flip our shared congressional district blue in 2024.
Thirty-five non-profit and political advocacy leaders from the entire Sierra region meet a second time to cement strategy for permanent organizing between election cycles.
Five volunteers from Nevada County attended the State Democratic Party Convention in Sacramento. It was a fabulous (and convenient) opportunity for mixing with organizers from all over the state. A vote was taken during the three day meeting to determine if any senatorial candidate could achieve the 60% majority needed for immediate endorsement. None could. Thus, there will be a contested race until the primary in March. Such contests reflect the deep bench and vibrancy of the California Democratic Party as we compete to protect Democracy, our freedoms, and the planet.
