March 2023 — Update from the Chair

By Steve Hurley

In March, the following activities occurred.

I started off right by taking on such high-level tasks as revising the org- chart, collecting dues, and, of course, emptying the trash at volunteer headquarters. These tasks may seem inconsequential, but I figured would serve to ratify myself as a capable new figurehead who can “roll up my sleeves.” Long may you want me! By way of encore, I am scheduled to give my first ever “state of the local party” address the first Saturday in April at the Women’s club meeting in the Madelyn Helling Library. Meeting starts at 9:30 AM.

NEW TECHNOLOGY AND MEETING PLACE FOR THE NEVADA COUNTY DEM CENTRAL COMMITTEE
A new technology called “The Owl” was deployed at the Third Thursday Democrat Central Committee meeting. The technology turns a Zoom meeting into a more integrated “hybrid” form of participation so that DCC Members can attend virtually and physically as if they were together in the same room. DCC Meetings start in person, at 6:00 PM, in the Community Room at Briar Patch (“A.K.A. The Patch”) Email nevadacountydems@gmail.com for the online link which will remain the same every month. In March we had 16 of 29 members attend either in person or online.

STORAGE SHED SPRING CLEANING
The chair would like to thank all who helped in the first round of storage shed straighten-up. This seminal event happened on Saturday, March 18th, 2023. Known participants include Karen Tricomi, Eric Robins, Rory Duncan, and Ronda Trujillo (A.K.A. “The Shed Queen”) It is reported that the first pass on the storage shed was so successful, that a follow up event is planned for later this month. Glory to all in the highest!

CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY
Organizer Sue Hildebrand has been hired to reach out to the two largest Northern California congressional districts in the region, “CD1” and “CD3,” respectively. One of Sue’s latest is for all the 17 county chairs in these districts to co-sign an invitation to the currently announced DEM Senatorial primary race candidates Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee, tour our area. These big-wig types may be coming soon to a small town near you.

Several Nevada County elected and appointed delegates will be attending the Convention scheduled for late May. I will be going down to “Lala Land,” and will report on what happens from the Los Angeles downtown Convention Center.

ORGANIZING FOR POWERTRAINING
Noga Wizansky, a recent transplant from the Bay Area, put us on to a terrific training opportunity given by a group of labor organizers. It was internationally produced which was a lesson in itself. Noga was our local training organizer and facilitator who successfully guided the group of twenty Democrats, some from the local party, the women's club,Indivisible Women, and the Sunrise group. We are excited to put this knowledge to work building toward the next election.

DEMOCRACY PARTNERS AT VOLUNTEER HEADQUARTERS EVERY WEEK
Currently, four “Democracy Partners” (another name for volunteers) are staffing the year-around DEM Headquarters located just one block up the street from the BNC shopping center in Brunswick So convenient! Stop by and say hello! Hours and location are on our upgraded website. The URL is NevadaCountyDemocrats.org

FUNDRAISER ON APRIL 23th
The Chair would like to invite all fun-loving DEMS to our latest fundraising picnic now scheduled at the Condon Park Picnic Area on April 26th. See details elsewhere in this newsletter.
