May 2024 Chair Report
On Saturday May 4th, the Nevada County Democratic Women’s Club elected new officers; (see picture above) It also bestowed their annual Eleanor Roosevelt award to Rev. Lani Howard, retiring DWC secretary, and Karen Tricomi, a volunteer member of the DCC’s Get Out the Vote Committee as well as awarded scholarships to NJUHS seniors, Bella Heryford and Cloe Metz at their annual June luncheon held this year at the Stonehouse Restaurant.
Two days later, snow conditions finally allowed the Tahoe Truckee Club to hold their monthly meeting in person at the Truckee Airport. Local speaker Jill Zapata updated DEM club members on the activities of the local educator political action committee.
On May 7th, our own Democracy Workshop was held featuring three presenters from Citizens for Choice, The hosts and the presenters ( see above) both did an excellent job teaching through audience participation. This monthly activity continues to evolve impressively in new and creative ways.
The Nevada County Get out the Vote (GOTV) Committee organized another successful sign waiving event in two locations at the same time. Ongoing letter writing campaigns and stepped-up door-to-door canvasing were additional tasks. New volunteers have begun to participate at an accelerated rate, possibly because of house party events introducing grass roots activism to attendees. Call headquarters if you would like to host a house party. This committee is organizing the June 8th Day of Action to canvass for Jessica Morris here in Grass Valley. See details above!
Closely related to GOTV efforts, the Congressional District 3 Regional Organizing Committee met twice this month. This region-wide umbrella group meets to coordinate political activism in all areas of our shared congressional district. Jessica’s race has been identified as winnable by the California Democratic Party; hence, the unprecedented paid organizer support for our congressional district candidate by the party. She also is endorsed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and Emily’s list.
For me, the month closed out with a flight to San Diego to attend the three-day meeting of the Executive Committee of the California Democratic Party. As is typical at these periodic meetings, county Committee Chairs from around the state interacted with their respective Regional Directors and with the Chair of the State Democratic Party. Strategy to flip the House of Representatives Blue this November was a major topic. Other activities in San Diego included standing committee meetings and caucus meetings. Any DEM can attend one of these events as an observer, a delegate, or as a proxy for another delegate as I did this year.
Speaking of events in San Diego, in June I will be briefing our two local chartered clubs, the Democratic Women’s club and the Tahoe Truckee Club, as well as our Democratic Central Committee and our Executive Committee on the outcome of the San Diego conference. Any registered is welcome to join. Call Volunteer Headquarters for details.
I’m sure we’re all gratified to hear the recent verdict in Trump’s hush money cover-up case, but we need to remind ourselves that being a convicted felon does not exclude Trump from running for office. The constitution requires a conviction for attempting to overthrow the government and those trials probably have been successfully delayed enough to not be able to be concluded until after the election. We must continue to be diligent in our efforts to elect Democrats up and down the ballot!
