July 2024 Chair Report
Current senatorial candidate Adam Schiff (of January 6th Committee Fame) joined forces with our local congressional candidate Jessica Morse early this month. Both candidates combined schedules to attend two sold out fundraisers, one in Roseville, and another in Truckee.
Successful fundraisers were swiftly followed by my attendance at two days of training in electioneering science at Citizen Hotel in Sacramento. About 50 activists from around the state gathered to train on database software that combines public voter data with advanced tabulation and reporting features deemed indispensable to a professionally run campaign at any level of government.
The 4th of July parade went well this year with 25 activists marching under our banner. This was followed by a “CD3 Regional partnership” Zoom meeting featuring 21 leaders from all the 10 Northern California counties that will elect Jessica Morse to replace the MAGA GOP incumbent as our next congress person.
In Nevada County, our local Get Out the Vote Committee (GOTV) spearheads this effort. The committee is experiencing a deluge of inquiries in the wake of the announcement that Vice President Harris will be running for president. GOTV volunteers staff our headquarters full-time months earlier than usual as a reflection of the high-stakes presidential election ahead.
Speaking of elections, Nevada County Democrats have voted to endorse four local candidates, so far, with more to come. As always, candidates are approved by a vote of our local Central Committee at monthly meetings that anyone is welcome to attend.
As the month draws to a close, the NC DEM Events and Outreach Committee continue to plan our annual Nevada County Fair booth. Every year over 40 Democrat volunteers staff this booth. Any registered DEM can volunteer. The next fair training is at Nevada County Media on July 30th. See details elsewhere in this newsletter.
Finally, both the Women’s Club and Tahoe Truckee club are planning an extensive public airing of the radical MAGA plan known as Project 2025. Two reasons to focus on the plan crafted by a formerly conservative (now radicalized) DC think tank is that: 1) the plan erodes separation of church and state, and 2) the plan consolidates most all government power in the executive. Both elements are directly at odds with what the founders intended.
In the wake of the resignation of President Joe Biden as our candidate in this election, I wish to thank him for his incredible 40 year record of service to this country and pulling us out of the dark hole of the Trump administration to build an economy that is the envy of the world at this point and get some control of the epidemic. As of July 22, Vice President Kamala Harris has enough pledged delegates to win the nomination at the convention.
Thanks to monthly efforts like those itemized above, Nevada County Democrats are leaning into this crucial election aware that the fate of the American Experiment is on the line. Our duty, therefore, as patriots, is to do what the framers of the constitution hoped we would do. Namely that we would defend our freedoms, our democracy, and the planet.
