August 2023 — Update from the Chair
This month featured the mobilization of 70 individual ‘Democracy Partners’ (volunteers) to help January 6th Insurrection investigator and current senatorial candidate Adam Schiff appear at the Grass Valley Center for the Arts. This sold out event occurred the same week as the need to staff our upgraded ‘Growing Democracy’ booth at the Nevada County Fair.
We managed both efforts simultaneously thanks to the intense efforts of our people. Thank you to all who were part of this action while having fun at the same time. Incidentally, Adam Schiff was seen the next morning at a local coffee shop, and he visited our fair booth a full 24 hours after his speech. As many who attended the event found out, Adam likes to mingle. We all hope he comes back soon.
In the earlier part of the month, Former Chair Peter Minett and I paid our respects to the Auburn Area Democratic Club down the hill. We went to hear two elected Nevada Irrigation District Directors, Ricki Heck and Karen Hull, present a timely update on NID trends and policies.
They also presented in June at our own First Tuesday Educational Forum. Several Auburn based activists were in attendance.
I bring this up because engaging regionally is an important component of our 2024 election strategy. Nevada County has leaned Democratic since 2016. Since then, we have become an example for surrounding counties of how much can change when regular people show up and do the work. In addition, we will need a high turnout from Democratic voters in Placer County if we are to elect a Democrat to our recently redrawn 3rd congressional district next year.
August ended well, with activists in five surrounding communities holding sign waiving events in our congressional district. This action is needed because Congressperson Kevin Kiley’s voting record on women’s right to choose is dismal.
Going forward, First Tuesday Educational Forums in Nevada County will continue to be open to all. They will continue to be held monthly at the Nevada County Media facility on Whispering Pines Drive in Nevada City. September’s subject will be climate change. See above for details.
Please consider attending our upcoming events to help protect Democracy, our Freedoms, and the Planet.
